Medieval Era Transformation & 3D Integration - Casterly Rock

Role: Digital Matte Painter | Environment Study

The Goal

Originally an assignment focused on 2D tracking and basic 3D element integration, I chose to expand this project into a comprehensive medieval era makeover. The objective was to completely strip the plate of modern civilization and reconstruct it into a fortified coastal environment, focusing on historical immersion and high-detail architectural modification.

The Workflow

The process began with an extensive digital cleanup in Nuke to remove all modern structures while carefully preserving the natural water movement of the lake. In Photoshop, I performed a heavy "paint-over" of the provided 3D castle, redesigning the towers and applying custom textures and weathering to enhance the realism. I also removed all signs of modern civilization over the terrain, created new environmental assets, including a defensive treeline, foreground/background rocks, and period-appropriate boats. These elements were integrated back into Nuke, where I used noise-driven animation to simulate waves hitting the rocks and performed advanced keying and retiming on the castle flags to unify the scene.

The Real Challenges

  • Architectural Overhaul: Moving beyond a simple 3D placement, I had to redesign the castle's silhouette and texture. This required matching the light direction of the plate while adding weathering that felt consistent with a coastal environment.

  • Preserving Water Movement: Cleaning up a lake while keeping the original plate’s ripples is a delicate task. I had to meticulously mask and blend the clean-up patches to ensure the water's natural "life" wasn't lost in the restoration.

  • Animated Environmental FX: To ground the digital rocks, I used noise patterns in Nuke to create interactive "splash" and wave movement. This subtle animation was key to making the static DMP assets feel integrated into the moving footage.

  • Historical Cleanup: Removing every trace of modern civilization required a sharp eye for detail. Every road, antenna, or modern building had to be replaced with natural or period-accurate geography to maintain the medieval illusion.

Tools Used

  • Adobe Photoshop

  • Nuke

Production Note: Complete medieval environment reconstruction, including architectural paint-overs and custom animated water FX, based on a MattePaint.com assignment.
